“Prescription Drug Abuse:  An Epidemic”

Purpose:  Prescription medicines, when used as prescribed, play a critical role in improving patient health. However, when misused or abused, they can be dangerous or even deadly. In November 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that more people die in America every year from prescription painkillers than die from heroin and cocaine combined. This webinar will address a wide variety of issues, including prescription fraud, drug diversion, and management of patients on chronic opioid therapy.

Objectives: 

• Recognize the scale and scope of prescription drug abuse in the U.S.
• Describe risk factors that may lead to prescription drug abuse.
• Outline a comprehensive pain evaluation and management plan.
• Develop strategies to educate patients concerning management of pain.
