Agenda (Revised):
8:00 – 8:30 Registration / Check-in / Continental Breakfast
8:30 – 8:45 Welcome Remarks
Speaker: Tammy Wade, CHRMS President
8:45 – 9:45 Keynote Presentation, “To Speak or Not To Speak? Managing Reputational Risks” (Sponsored by CassidaySchade)
Speaker: Randall Samborn, J.D., Senior Vice President, Levick
Randall Samborn, a lawyer and a former award-winning legal affairs reporter, has more than three decades of unparalleled, specialized experience in the rarified space where the practice of law intersects with media. He served for two decades as the spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Chicago. Now, he provides litigation and crisis communications counseling to a variety of clients facing momentous challenges inside and outside of court. In his presentation, Randall will address numerous high-profile, life- and business- changing Public Relations (PR) events and the ways in which the participants addressed the attendant media attention—both good and bad. PR events are becoming increasingly common in the healthcare space from tainted scopes to fraudulent billing to rogue physicians and unnecessary medical procedures. The way in which healthcare providers react to these events is of vital importance from a community/patient trust standpoint as well as from a business continuity/financial standpoint. Randall will address why and how “bad news” proliferates so quickly as well as why and how preparation and proper response matters. He will share examples of consequences of both poor and effective planning and will also share pre-and post-response best practices.
9:45 – 11:15 "Behavioral Health Patient Safety: The Enterprise”
Speaker: Monica Cooke, BSN, MA, RNC, CPHQ, CPHRM, FASHRM, National Association for Healthcare Quality
The rate of behavioral health patients being managed on non-behavioral health settings is consistently rising as a result of the lack of appropriate resources. This session will focus on the enterprise risks associated with the management of behavioral patients in the ED and acute care setting. High risk issues will be reviewed and organizational mitigation strategies will be presented. A tool box will be provided for a take away.
11:15 – 11:30 Break
11:30 – 12:30 "Social Media in Health Care: Friend or Foe?"
Speaker: Caroline Bell, RN, BSN, JD, CPHRM, FASHRM; Assistant Vice President, Healthcare Risk Management; AWAC Services, a member company of Allied World
In a generation that is more likely to go online to ask general health questions then ask a doctor, healthcare providers have been challenged to become social media savvy. Healthcare providers are blogging, educating, corresponding and collaborating with patients and other practitioners involved in the care of patients. However, evolving risks have surfaced regarding social media and its impact on healthcare entities. This program will provide an overview of the positive attributes and contemporary risks associated with the effect of social media on the healthcare industry.
12:30 - 1:30 Lunch (Sponsored by Ironshore)
1:30 - 2:30pm "Providing Emotional Support During Adverse Events in Health Care"
Speaker: Vanessa Houdek, Psy.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Employee Assistance Counselor, Advocate Employee Assistance Program & Advocate Family Care Network
Healthcare workers are susceptible to cumulative stress or burn-out that builds over time and causes continual arousal of the body. Vanessa Houdek, Psy.D., will use clinical scenarios to address the three phases of cumulative stress, the effect of cumulative stress in adapting to adverse events, and how the multi-component Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) intervention program may be effectively used to manage adverse events and provide emotional support to impacted health workers, and in doing so, may decrease additional risks to the healthcare worker, to the patient / family, and to the organization.
2:30 – 2:45 Break
2:45 – 3:45 “Workplace Violence / Active Shooter Session”
Speaker: Michael Culloton, Agent, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Chicago, IL
Michael Culloton is a Special Agent FBI who has been assigned to the Chicago Division for the last 15 years with a prior assignment to the Baltimore Division. He is one of the FBI’s Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) instructors who provide training to law enforcement and community groups on active shooter situations. His presentation will define Active Shooter situations; discuss agencies involved in Active Shooter situations; as well as interagency initiatives. He will share lessons learned from Active Shooter Studies and he will also discuss planning / prevention efforts and actions to take and avoid during Active Shooter situations.
